Personal Problems & Plea for Fic!
Jul. 4th, 2007 04:48 amI have a mass growing in my right breast. They biopsied it yesterday, but the pathology report won't be back until Friday afternoon or (argh!) Monday morning.
I need 3-5 days worth of distraction, people.
Rec me some slash, babies!
I want exquisite writing in any fandom from any time. Worlds I can get lost in. Give me an overlooked gem, or remind me of an old favorite or two (or three or twenty). Short or long, light or dark, hearts and flowers or sizzlin' porn; it's all good.
(To any and all "old timers" out there: I find I'm especially hankering for fic in TS, MfU, SG1 -- old, lost loves. We got a new computer last year when our old one crashed and burned, and I lost a lot of links in the process. Plus, I got distracted by the shiny of SGA, then SPN, so I know I've missed some stories that shouldn't be missed.)
What wonderful stories do you have bookmarked? Which authors do you go back to time and time again? Where do you go for respite from the real world?

Date: 2007-07-04 01:31 pm (UTC)And then, looking at fandoms, I didn't really do the ones you're hankering for, but when I need hard-core distractions, worlds that I can get lost in, these are some of my favorites.
Old school XF
I Still Have Plans to Go to Mexico (http://members.aol.com/radclyffeh/mexico.html), by MJ and JiM; Skinner/Mulder/Krycek
Ghosts (http://www.strangeplaces.net/torch/ghosts.html) and Lovers (http://www.strangeplaces.net/torch/lovers.html), by torch; Mulder/Krycek
Oh, wait, I do have an SG-1, Rheanna's The Midas Syndrome (http://thebookcase.org/stargate/fsgrmidas.html), which is gen, but is just *so* Jack.
Can I distract you with a little popslash? It is excellent for taking away the real world, I promise. Sandy's Many-Roomed Houses of Wood (http://suitableforframing.mediawood.net/yourlife.htm) was what dragged me down. And wearemany's The Long Run (http://www.wearemany.net/tiff/longrun.html) sealed my doom. And I know you liked Freedom's Just Another Word--syne also has some killer pop stuff: Heart of Stone, Eyes of Tree (http://www.kekkai.org/synecdochic/hostoc.html), which plays with the Tam Lin story, and Rake at the Gates of Hell (http://www.kekkai.org/synecdochic/rake.html), which, swear to God, works a thousand times better in the Hellblazer universe than Keanu ever did. All of these work on their own, I think, so even if you don't have the faintest idea who anyone is, they're still awesome stories.
Hit me up for more if you run out!

Date: 2007-07-04 01:45 pm (UTC)I'm actually really happy to have good recs from fandoms I haven't read in -- that's usually how I get dragged into a new fandom. I didn't ever get into XF because the writers I knew weren't writing it, and the fandom's so huge I didn't know where to start.
I didn't get into popslash because I used to have a real RPS squick, but SPN has kind of destroyed all of my boundaries....
Yay! I'm gonna go read now.
(And thanks for the moral support. Your reports came back O.K.?)

Date: 2007-07-06 08:52 am (UTC)I don't even know what the other fandom you listed is, but I can give it a go in SG1 (http://lily-liedtome.livejournal.com/tag/stargate+sg-1) and TS (http://lily-liedtome.livejournal.com/tag/the+sentinel). And Popslash (http://lily-liedtome.livejournal.com/tag/popslash), of course. *grins*
The Sentinel (I haven't read TS in a while, so this is just the contents of my bookmark folder, although in general I'd rec anything by alyjude (http://www.852prospect.org/archive/cgi-bin/search.cgi?ShortResults=0&Title=&Author=alyjude&Summary=&Date=0&SortBy=0&SortOrder=0&NumToList=0&FastSearch=0), legion (http://www.852prospect.org/archive/cgi-bin/search.cgi?ShortResults=0&Title=&Author=legion&Summary=&Date=0&SortBy=0&SortOrder=0&NumToList=0&FastSearch=0), and grey (http://www.852prospect.org/archive/cgi-bin/search.cgi?ShortResults=0&Title=&Author=grey&Summary=&Date=0&SortBy=0&SortOrder=0&NumToList=0&FastSearch=0), off the top of my head.
Bid Him Come, Bid Him Go (http://www.852prospect.org/archive/archive/au/bidhim.html) by Legion
Long plotty wonderful AU thing.
Call Waiting (http://www.852prospect.org/archive/archive/1_2000_au/callwaiting.html) by ceares (http://www.852prospect.org/archive/cgi-bin/search.cgi?ShortResults=0&Title=&Author=ceares&Summary=&Date=0&SortBy=0&SortOrder=0&NumToList=0&FastSearch=0)
Is that a goat?
Choices (http://www.852prospect.org/archive/archive/1/choices.html) by Dolimir
The Suicide Hotline AU; not nearly as depressing as it could be.
Conspirare (http://www.852prospect.org/archive/archive/drama6/conspirare.html) by Rhipodon Society
Vampires in Canada? This is possibly a crossover, although I honestly have no idea with what.
Demolition Woman (http://www.852prospect.org/archive/archive/1_2000_series/demolitionwoman.html) by Betty Plotnick
Oh, I don't need a summary here - it's Betty P so you know it's good. Part of the sixteen instinctual behaviours (http://internettrash.com/users/livia/plotnick/betty.htm) series.
Distracting Jim (http://www.852prospect.org/archive/archive/5/distractingjim.html) by Mererid
"Never ask your 3-year-old brother to hold a tomato."
Dreams Through Waking (http://www.852prospect.org/archive/archive/1_2000_pwp/dreamsthrough.html) by Tangent
Lightning and conversation.
Dress For Success (http://www.852prospect.org/archive/archive/firsts3/dressfor.html) by Alyjude
In which there are old friends and new revelations and a ever so revealing pair of jeans.
Eating at Home (http://www.852prospect.org/archive/archive/firsts2/eatingat.html) by Helen
Jim and Blair and a stakeout a slight case of nipple to mouth contact. Among other things.
I Still Believe (http://www.852prospect.org/archive/archive/5/istill.html) by Dasha (and sequels)
Starting over in the country, good timing, small towns.
Personal Casualty (http://www.852prospect.org/archive/archive/15/personalcasualty.html) by Wistful
A mistake, another mistake, a honeymoon and a revelation. I'm such a sucker for happy endings.
Sandburg, there aren't any penguins in Peru (http://www.852prospect.org/archive/archive/11/sandburgthere.html) by Alice
PENGUINS and interdimensional portals. ROFL. It's almost entirely unlike that time (http://lily-liedtome.livejournal.com/6605.html) in popslash, with the fish.
Sure, Chief (http://www.852prospect.org/archive/archive/16/surechief.html) by Caro Dee
"Will you be my sex slave?"
Um, this got a bit long, so I've had to split it into two parts. *blushes*

Date: 2007-07-06 08:54 am (UTC)I always enjoy Keiko Kirin (http://www.area52hkh.net/author.php?name=Keiko+Kirin)'s work, although I have to say my stint reading in this fandom was very short.
Engraved (http://www.sori.popullus.net/engraved.html) by Sori
Jack, Daniel, dogtags.
Coyote at Starbucks () by Amperage
One of my favourite stories in any fandom, and a wonderful concept. A similar one in the BTVS fandom, When Coyote Came to Sunnydale (http://www.catbones.com/scarecrow-horses/docs/whencoyotecametosunnydale.html) by
Continuing Education (http://www.852prospect.org/archive/archive/xover/continuingeducation.html) by AliCat
A SG1/Sentinel crossover, more of which can be found here (http://community.livejournal.com/the_rec_room/290255.html) - I particularly recommend those by Legion.
Popslash
A couple of my particular favourites...
Actually, you know what? You should probably just check out my popslash tag (linked above), because this entry is going to be far too long if I get started on that. I recommend starting at the earliest entry and moving forward -- the more essential links are farther back.
And, finally, I have no idea whether you read Buffy the Vampire Slayer or not, but when I need to escape into stories, that is usually where I retreat -- particularly anything by tabaqui (http://www.catbones.com/scarecrow-horses/fanfiction.html) (who you probably know from her wolfpack series in SPN) and
Oi. Ok, I think I done for now. I hope you enjoy!

I haven't had a chance to check out
Thank you so much.

Date: 2007-07-05 06:55 am (UTC)Yes, I am aware that it is July, but I find that no matter how many fics I read when they are all shiny and new that I never get to them all. Today I read Sensoria () a Pretty in Pink and Ferris Buellers day off crossover that is duckie/cameron.

Date: 2007-07-05 07:53 am (UTC)Anyway, A beautiful Lifetime Event (http://www.intimations.org/fanfic/stargate/lifetime_event.html). I love this fic. It was the one that got me hooked on SGA.
Ladies Night at the Boom Boom Room, or Bell Curve (http://glitterati.talkoncorners.net/fiction/bellcurve/bellcurve.html). Their are many sequels (check here (http://glitterati.talkoncorners.net/fiction/index.html#sga)). It is fabulous.

Date: 2007-07-05 10:06 pm (UTC)I've read a couple of these and really loved them, which means I already know that I like your taste. Which means I'm excited about reading all those others on your list (most of them!) that I haven't read before.
Thank you!

Date: 2007-07-05 10:18 pm (UTC)I did try for fics that were diverse, but hopefully you'll enjoy them all.
Let me know if yo run out of things to read.
