Home from the Hosiptal
Jul. 28th, 2007 12:11 pmLess symmetrical than I used to be, but everything else seems to be intact, thank God, including my slightly off-kilter sense of humor.
I love my daughter! She went to the video store to get me some "comfort movies." Were she picking for herself, she would have brought back a giant stack of chick flicks. I -- can't handle chick flicks at the moment. I don't want to watch anything in which the beauty of our intrepid heroine (particularly not her softly-rounded or lushly-full bozooms) is a plot point.
She brought back:
What do y'all think we should rent next? What would you watch if (1) your energy levels were low -- like, fall asleep every hour or two low, and (2) you wanted to avoid our cultural obsession with pairs of perfect, perky tits, but still wanted to be entertained? *g*

She brought back:
- Snatch
- The Lost Boys
- Shawn of the Dead
- Men With Brooms
- The Bourne Identity
- Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
- My Big Fat Greek Wedding (fully acceptable because part of the point is that Nia Vardalos isn't Hollywood pretty)
- Buffy the Vampire Slayer (fully acceptable because her boobs are part of the joke!)

Date: 2007-07-28 10:21 pm (UTC)Here's the list:
Another Country, it is British, made in the late 1980s set in the 1930s. You should enjoy it if you are a slash fan. Stars Rupert Everett, Colin Firth and Cary Elwes.
Highlander, though of course I'd avoid the sequels.
Better of Dead, one of the best of the 1980s teen comedies, stars John Cusack. Is about a guy who tries to commit suicide cos his girlfriend left him but keeps failing. Some of the jokes are a bit sharp but nothing worse than Shawn of the Dead I think.
My Beautiful Laundrette, also British also late 80s but set late 80s about an interracial gay romance, stars a very young Daniel Day Lewis.
A Beautiful Thing, British, mid to late 1990s, a sweet gay teen romance.
Thunderheart, starring Val Kilmer and Graeme Greene, a murder mystery. Val Kilmer is an FBI agent Graeme Greene is a Native American policeman, they investigate murder and skulduggery on the reservation. No Romance.
The Princess Bride, may have slightly too many boobies in it. But I think, like Buffy, the boobs are part of the joke and they are not in any way the entirety of the plot.
Also of course I would remcomend some blockbusters; the Harry Potter films (mostly the third and fourth, the first two were a bit rubbish); the Xmen movies particularly the second film; The Fantastic Four; Troy (mostly for the under-dressed men, it doesn't have much else to recommend it); Pirates of the Caribbean (though it may have too much Keira Knightly)
Hope this is helpful

Date: 2007-07-30 02:07 pm (UTC)Other than the blockbusters, I haven't seen any of the others, but they're all going on the "must view" list. Gay boys always make me happy, my daughter is appalled that I haven't seen Better Off Dead, and I have an inexplicably strong crush on Graham Greene (don't know how I missed this one).
Thank you!

Date: 2007-07-28 11:26 pm (UTC)As you've got Shaun of the Dead... How about Hot Fuzz - being as its the same people - only with the police not zombies. Plus Timothy Dalton in a villian moustache.
Erm. I too would have suggested Highlander.
Connie and Carla? Being as its Nia Vardalos?
Stage Beauty for something slightly off kilter?
Labyrinth for some old school David Bowie in a crazy hairdo entertainment?
Or - if you like weird films - can I suggest the cartoon (I think it was released over there as) The Triplets of Bellville. Originally French - but with English subtitles. With the best trip into a dog's phsyche ever. No really. Weird. You either get it and think its the best thing ever. Or just think its odd.
Erm. Now I'm stumped. The cultural obsession with perfection has left me with few other ideas. Unless of course you want to go the whole action film with pathetic blonde who needs rescuing every five minutes? In which case your daughter should head for the Steven Seagal et al section...

Date: 2007-07-30 02:56 pm (UTC)The daughter was thinking that Hot Fuzz hadn't been released here yet, but I just checked Amazon, and it's available for ordering, so I think I must go
harassgently encourage the manager of our vid store to get it on the shelf.I remember hearing about The Triplets of Bellville, but haven't seen it yet. It's so going on the list.
(And, yeah. The pathetic blonde. I think she and her ilk are "to be avoided for now." *shudders*)
Thank you!

Date: 2007-07-29 12:14 am (UTC)The second Bourne movies, also of the good. Have you seen these (just listing the movies I can see again and again) that might fit with the profile of the list you rented:
Fight Club
Trainspotting
Oldboy (Korean)
Tombstone
District B13 (French)
The Transporter
Have you seen Firefly? If not, since you enjoyed Buffy, thumbs up there.
You are in my thoughts, which I know might be strange, coming from a total stranger, but I have thought of you as I get ready for my day.

Date: 2007-07-31 01:29 am (UTC)Which leaves Oldboy, District B13, and The Transporter to go on the "Yay, new movies" list right now. Woo-hoo! \o/
Also, I get the stranger thing. I wound up falling hard into SPN because I accidentally stumbled across
*gives you a great big thank you hug*

Date: 2007-07-29 12:28 am (UTC)The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert - Their boobs are fake and they still look faaaaabulous.
Master and Commander - For the subtext that is text. And no one looks prettier in a flowered robe than Paul Bettany.

Date: 2007-08-05 01:45 pm (UTC)I LOL at your Crouching Tiger comment. So true. I'm saving that one for in case I have to do chemo (I'll find that out on Tuesday).
I'm really funny about John Malkovich. I had a crush on that man for the longest time, and then suddenly I didn't. Like, really didn't. Like, fingernails-on-a-chalkboard didn't. And I don't know what happened!
Gladiator, though. Mmmm. Pretty, sweaty men being all manly, with lots of subtextual possibilities. Yeah.
*g*
